Harrisonburg Blue (Drinking Liberally)

Drinking Liberally is an informal, inclusive progressive social group. We have a monthly social every 2nd Thursday at 6pm. This month we mee May 13th at 6pm till 9pm. Raise your spirits while you raise your glass, and share ideas while you share a pitcher. Drinking Liberally gives like-minded, left-leaning individuals a place to talk politics. You don’t need to be a policy expert and this isn’t a book club – just come and learn from peers, trade jokes, vent frustration and hang out in an environment where it’s not taboo to talk
politics.

Bars are democratic spaces – you talk to strangers, you share booths, you feel the bond of common ground. Bring democratic discourse to your local democratic space – build democracy one drink at a time.

While drinking liberally, always remember to drink responsibly, and make liberal use of designated drivers. Drinking and driving is reckless and irresponsible, like a neocon war or corporatist tax cut. Liberals, don’t
do it.

Drinking Liberally is not exclusive to people over the age of 21. Feel free to come by and have some food and soda and talk politics. Hope everyone can make it out.

I think it is a great idea to socialize with like-minded people, have a few drinks and talk politics. I would hope we could build on this and create a group open to folks of all political points of view. Liberals are very experienced at arguing amongst themselves. I’ve found that people on the Right tend to want to reinforce their own beliefs by excluding individuals with ideas that do not fit their particular doctrine. We need to start building bridges and learn from those with whom we disagree. Sharing a few drinks and ideas is a good start.

Also, “Drinking Liberally” has a connotation (unintended I hope) of over indulging. Perhaps you could rethink that.

    Re. David Root.

Drinking Liberally is a nationally known organization and part of Living Liberally, http://www.livingliberally.org. Other such groups include Reading Liberally, Tipping Liberally and Screening Liberally and so on…

There is actually a Reading Liberally in Staunton along with another Drinking Liberally group.

    Don,

I still think that “Drinking Liberally” is an unfortunate (albeit clever) choice of words, and is quite different than “Reading Liberally,” etc. And as I wrote, though I think the idea for the group is a good one, I would like to see a more diverse group in addition to the one you advocate.
