Bike Virginia the Shenandoah Expedition starts its journey in Staunton on Friday June 25, 2010, arriving in Harrisonburg on Monday June 28th. This five day tour takes cyclists through the magnificent country sides of Augusta, Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties.
The economic impact of Bike Virginia in 2005 calculated at 3.1 million dollars for a five day tour. Bike Virginia travels the Commonwealth in cycles (no pun intended). ”Their last ride through Harrisonburg and Rockingham County was in 2004,” reports Tourism Operations Manager, Brenda Black.
The 2,000 Bike Virginia cyclists come in all sizes, shapes, and ages. This is a fun ride, not a race. The tour is designed for recreational touring, not fast pace-line riding. The average age on the touris 52, with nearly 40% of those participants being female.
Tent City will be located in Harrisonburg at Eastern Mennonite University, Monday June 28th and Tuesday June 29th. Both days cyclists are invited to Do Downtown, Enjoy a Downtown Guided Walking Tours($10), Monday June 28th the day starts at the OPEN house at Hardesty-Higgins House Visitor Center, serving light refreshments , then top off the day with an Outdoor Music Festival ~ featuring Everyday People. 6:00-8:30pm in the grassy lot across from the Daily News Record. Tickets $2. Meet the Mayor, massage tent, Pizza & Beverage sales.
Bike Bash in the Burg is presented by Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance. Event Planner Kris Ludwig encourages the community to come out to the park next to Turner Pavilion and enjoy the festivities and open air music, “our community loves cycling so we thought why not welcome Bike Virginia to Harrisonburg with a fun concert celebration downtown. The community & the cyclists are invited to attend.”
