When moneyed interests and anti-science ideology, coupled with a polemical opposition to progressivism trumps common sense, we get politicians such as McDonnell. Whether they really believe what they profess or whether they are paying off their corporate lobbyist supporters, we will never know for certain. Either way, they do a disservice to our state and nation.

Grant,
You are not the first to react in anger to misconstruing something you read. I’ve done it on more than one occasion. What slows me down is this adage: “Angry people never think clearly and rarely act responsibly.” I try my best to craft cogent arguments with this in mind. If I fail to exhibit the sufficient degree of anger, it is only because I have used up all my anger, having directed it at Nixon and US involvement in Vietnam many years ago. Hope you keep reading Harrisonburg Times as it is one of the few sources of rational, civil debate in this area.

Grant, a few points:

First, thanks for reading!

Second, I think you missed the very end of Dave’s sentence: “Unlike the hoax of global warming, the growing national debt is a real and serious problem that will spell doom if not addressed immediately, so say neo-conservatives.” Dave is writing about people who think global warming is a hoax, rather than stating his own opinion.

Dave’s submitted a collection of thoughtful pieces to the Harrisonburg Times – I encourage you to look around for them.

Third, while it’s not so completely obvious, this post is categorized as “opinion” rather than “news.” That’s actually the bulk of the content here so far. So, while there may be plenty of reasons to be wary of this site as a news source, please don’t make that judgement by the opinion pieces.

Fourth, and lastly, the Harrisonburg Times has featured a number of pieces that argue very strongly and articulately FOR the need for urgent action on global warming. Here are a few links, one even taking issue with Governor McDonnell’s answer about global warming at a local townhall meeting:

I am offended by your ignorance of calling Global Warming (politically correct would be ‘Climate Change’) a Hoax. Do you not realize you live in city that a progressive University calls its home? I mean, Integrated Science and Technology, Geographic Studies, Environmental Sciences, all the Sciences in general at JMU… What do you think they are teaching us? That Global Warming is a hoax? No sir, we study actual information and actual statistics and we know that despite the public’s disinformation based primarily on the Media (That’s You!) not knowing the fact that the world average temperature (not Harrisonburgs, not Virginia’s, not even necessarily the United States, but the WORLD’s Average Temperature is rising.

I have to admit, this is the first Harrisonburg Times Article I have read. Maybe there’s a reason for that. With this article in mind, I honestly cannot trust you as a valid source. Sorry for the honesty.

And yes, Capitalism has done a disservice to your family. That should make you mad, very mad. We shouldn’t be politely asking the rich for some of their wealth. We should be demanding it. Your not angry enough in the seriousness of this problem.

When I first moved to this area in 1975, my wife was a reporter for the DNR. Our circle of friends were mostly other reporters and editors. It was commonly known among the staff that the paper’s policy was extremely Right wing. However, the news arm tried its best to cover stories fairly and professionally. There were instances when the publisher killed stories to protect its local friends, which upset the reporters greatly. The DNR is first and foremost a business. If consumers and subscribers do not hold it to professional standards, it will always take the easy way out of ethical conflicts…as is evidenced by their past behavior.
